Massage Can Boost your Mental Health

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and Massage on Mille Lacs has placed a focus on the importance massage therapy has for mental health. Massage can help alleviate insomnia, stress, anxiety, frustration and toxic feelings that are not doing your mental health a favor.

“The power of touch alone can starve stress and fuel our positive receptors,” Says Vanessa Voss, one of our therapists at Massage on Mille Lacs. Our therapists work specific reflex points in the body that assist with stimulate the production of serotonin and dopamine, which promotes satisfaction, feelings of happiness and self-worth. This process decreases cortisol levels, a hormone produced related to stress and anxiety.

Before we start a massage service, Massage on Mil

le Lacs provides clients with a questionnaire asking about any injuries, medical conditions and medications. Massage on Mille Lacs also takes the opportunity to discuss the client’s overall state of mind. “Understanding the client’s state of mind provides me with an opportunity to combine massage modalities,” says Vanessa Voss.

Aromatherapy has proved to be of great benefit to our clients regarding their overall state of mind. “I use combinations of valor, lavender, white angelica and peace and calming – all of which are positive emotionally. I put a drop or two into my palms and allow the client to inhale the aroma with several deep breaths to start the session,” says Vanessa Voss.

Vanessa would like to offer some advice regarding various massage – specific concerns people tend to have:

· People who have tension and stress should consider varied pressure massages that will relax shoulder, neck, mid-back. People with tension and stress characteristically have raised shoulders elevated towards their ears. I Focus on the muscles of the neck, mid-back and shoulders then gently palpate through these muscle groups to warm up the tissue and fascia. I slowly increase pressure working into the muscle fibers by combining modalities, like Swedish or deep tissue.

· For those dealing with depression or sadness, let your massage therapist know. “While we are not trained to offer medical diagnosis and treat symptoms, we show compassion, comfort and supportive touch - combined with guided breathing techniques and applying essential oil blends to heal your individualized needs,” Explains Vanessa.

· For clients with sleep related anxiety or deprivation, reflexology on specific reflex points on the hands and feet are utilized. Those areas are reflexive of the head, brain and adrenal glands. Adrenal glands regulate energy, mood and anxiety. This results in low energy, trouble sleeping, mood swings, depression, anxiety and slower brain function.
